Meet Alan, the Scientologist

Insane or devout? Here’s a man who fully and completely accepts L. Ron Hubbard’s writings. It appears his entire life is wrapped around Hubbard’s beliefs. Has it improved his life? He appears to be living in one cramped little room, consisting of a bed, TV, toaster oven, micro fridge…and EVERY single thing Hubbard ever produced. And still he’s living better than your average Sea Org member.
I know very little about Alan. ArizonaDelRio says that he was booted out of Scientology. Before he was declared, his reality was completely swapped for L. Ron Hubbard’s reality. Can a person like this be expected to function in the Wog world? Scientology doesn’t seem to care. They spit him out as a damaged person when he was no more use to them.

Poor guy, has no connection to reality, whatsoever. How does someone like that survive?
Fruit Loops anyone?
The person that got me into scientology and later I became a sea org. member for awhile was just like that man stuck in every thing hubby wrote and said and yes he survived above the wogs looking and acting out like he knows all.I knew him as Tracy and he to was kicked out after they used him for his art and new ideals but still hung on to the writings of hubby. He’s gone now so he and hubby can play together with the wall of fire, just maybe hub will get it right without all that counter intension here on earth.
It’s horribly sad, but the man is so nasty that it is hard for me to feel sorry for him.
I imagine LRH himself spent the last few years of his life in similar circumstance: locked in a room crowded with his directives, waiting for a HotPocket to cool while relighting his Kool menthol, coughing out dismissive pronouncements on occurrences 40 million years prior and hence. C-R-A-Z-Y!
Obviously he is the true believer’s true believer.
The timber and tones and rhythms of his voice sound very similar to LRH. He talks frighteningly like his teacher.
In his defense, the camera holder wasn’t listening to what he was saying and seemed to be making the video to make fun of him. But the claim to be able to read cards held by another during poker was … telling.
Alan, if you are reading this, go see James Randi and get your million on your card reading powers and get it on tape. WIN THAT GAME.
I don’t think it’s fair to treat this man as a sort of one-man freakshow. He’s entitled to his unconventional beliefs, irrespective of whether or not they offend our sensibilities. Some would argue he’s ‘crazy,’ which really is an unfair generalization as the discussion is limited to his religious philosophy.
Also, there are millions if not billions of people who have religious beliefs that might seem unusual, unscientific, or irrational to others. And many of them are quite enthusiastic and fervid in their beliefs. Furthermore, perhaps he’s quite content to live a low maintenance lifestyle. Live and let live.
As far as the accusation regarding Scientology exploiting its members, and then abandoning them when they are no longer economically viable, I’m inclined to believe this criticism might have some merit. I used to work full-time for a Pentecostal Church and was paid modest wages including a small pension (401K) and healthcare benefits. It would be contemptible to just conveniently let older members wither on the vine without any provisions for their years of service.
Whilst I’m agnostic now, I consider myself sensitive to others religious and philosophical beliefs. I think there is an inherent danger in assigning labels of mental illness or making claims of insanity against people who subscribe to unusual ideologies. If we had no context, it might seem this man had a thought disorder and needed psychiatric help for psychotic mental illness. However, I think it’s best if we grant him unconditional acceptance and respect as a human being and not jump to unfair conclusions.

i shed tears because this man is our brother in this world and in christ. he seems so confused without knowing it. its sad what people can do to others because of money. look what they have done to this man. may God save him. L.R Hubbard was an only child that was so lonely that he had imaginary friends and started hypnotism and science fiction to make people to be his friends and to make a lot of money. may God forgive them all. I pray daily for the downfall of this horrible cult. how can a so called religion do this to a human being.
Acute, have you considered that you may have the same cold but a different virus?
Alan, like you, is trying to master spiritual principles. He is over the top. He is committed. He is made to look probably his worst in this video.
The real weirdo in this is the “friend” that did this to him.
I apologize for my former post. Alan, I wish you happiness.
I found this upsetting. He can’t answer a question as himself, only with “what Ron said”. He probably doesn’t think anything is wrong, so he won’t go for help. I do hope he is managing to survive ok in the real world. As Jeff says, maybe he is happy, but there is still reality to deal with. His friends should be aware that the cult may have told him he will commit suicide after a couple of years “out”, although maybe if he was kicked out for not toe-ing the line they haven’t bothered with that little gem.
I get that it isn’t helpful to accuse anyone of having mental health problems but .. to call a spade a spade.. isn’t that waht brainwashing causes?
He simply believes in scienology and that’s his right. At least he’s not trying to squeeze all the money out of other people like the Co$ does. So, no problem. I don’t really see any difference between him or Christians or Muslims or any other religous person, they all believe in somewhat weird stuff.

Scilon spin machine spews out lies about the Travoltas. I think Kelly is keeping John from splitting from the cult (she’s probably cooperating w/ Miscavige and Tommy Davis to keep him in). Calling Marc Headley…

Cruise possibly moving to San Fran (*insert gay joke here*)
rumor of the day (okay, this is more truth than rumor): Jenna Elfman’s show is on the chopping block and might be given the ax. aww, poor baby, unemployment is a bitch so don’t bitch about it.
Poor schmuck. This is what blind devotion to dangerously toxic levels of upper-level lunacy can do to a man. This guy seems “intelligent” to me. If he had devoted his intellect to a field other than LRH garbage, he may well have been an important contribution to society.
I am a hypnotist, and I’ve been involved with the anti-CoS movement for about 4 years now. Over and over, I see unmistakable evidence of hypnotic suggestion and brainwashing.
Documents and eyewitnesses suggest LRH was a hypnotist, and after listening to some of the tapes of his lectures and reading his memos and books, I completely agree. LRH understood the critical mechanisms of mind control and soft suggestion, and, while he was a horrible liar of a man, he was also a genius at efficiently turning curious, unsuspecting folks into unquestioning drones.
Vocabulary swapping (the jargon that all Scilons must learn and integrate), boldly lying and rewriting science and history (essentially every claim that Scientology makes), isolation, social redefinition (lovebombing) and decentralization (“You’re part of the group, now”) all correctly and masterfully used in tandem for an extended period of time will create people just like Alan.
It is despicable, hateful, and wrong, and we should double our efforts to let the public know about it.
Ramen noodle tech…
“You read that book you’ll understand that little word, L-I-F-E, life.”
Wow-and here I thought there was more to life than living in a closet, surrounded by $300,000 worth of fiction.
Guess I was wrong!
In all fairness to Alan, I think I need to provide more information. I was very mixed when I posted this video. Alan had no objection to being filmed as long as I wasn’t making money off the deal, or deliberately causing his church harm. I have done neither. What I find amazing is the fact Alan continues to defend his church regardless of what they personally did to him. He is a purest when it comes to Scientology principles and is unconcerned when it comes to church abuses of individuals. Alan himself is a generous and hard-working man. He has owned several businesses, worked as a gourmet chef, is a gold miner during the summer months, and is one wicked opponent when it comes to poker (he made twenty thousand dollars last year alone playing cards in his part time). What I find most refreshing about him is the fact he is completely forthcomming about his beliefs and totally uninterested in perpetuating any type of scam (unlike his church) against his fellow humanity. In a very real way, Scientology has worked for him. All this inspite of the fact his own church left him in the dust to rot. He has at different times given me money when I needed it, food when I had none, and a place to sleep when I had no where to go. If there is only one real Scientologist in the world, here he is.
Apart from the fact that his living conditions, personal habits and occasional rudeness seem far removed from the quest for a higher form of evolution, this one example of a thoroughly indoctrinated Scientologist is depressing in the extreme.
Even if one can follow, somewhat, the non-sequential mutterings of this strange man it does little to clarify the cultish ideology of Scientology. One would have to be eyeball deep in this mucky credo to take it this seriously and with apparent conviction – so much the pity, to live your life in this surreal world.
One thing though, I believe the Buddhists would disagree that their most sacred “leader” is even remotely connected with Hubbard!
Greetings ArizonaDelRio,
I’m thankful you posted the video. It would have been nice to get a longer interview, as Alan is quite a compelling figure. I found myself wanting to learn more about him and his story. Also, I’m thankful that you added this extra biographical information-after the video. Unfortunately, a lot of people are too willing to jump to unfounded conclusions based on their schema for what a “successful” person ought to look like and act like. Also, there are a lot of people who define a person’s worth using materialistic assumptions. It’s interesting to note that Allan has many talents and skills, and can provide for himself (and others and you’ve noted) with an array of skills. I personally think he should be lauded for living in a tight quarters and not over-consuming resources!
Thank you Arizona,
Jeffrey (btw, I loved your Youtube site and vids)
I’ve listened to a few of Hubbard’s lectures, and most of the time I have no idea what the hell he’s talking about (even though I speak passable Scientologese). Well, now I realize that there are people who *do* understand him, and that’s a little scary. Although, to be honest, Alan does sounds a lot like ol’ Ron hisself.
Rio, I don’t know how you can say Scientology has worked for him, if he’s done all those things and is living in a single room and cooking Hot Pockets in a toaster oven. I can see the racks and racks of LRH lectures on the left of the pics (that’s what all those plastic packs are, for those not in the know) and those cost some *serious* cash. Rather, I think he works for Scientology (and I don’t mean in the employment sense). He buys their bullshit, gives them all his money, and has ingested the mindset (which is designed to make you believe that money isn’t all that important for you, and will be better off in the hands of the Church).
I look at this little glimpse of Alan and I see a sad, sad case of someone who was looking for answers and was sold a bill of goods by the Church — someone who fell into the scam because he was exactly the kind of person for whom Hubbard designed it.
This is what makes me angry about people who leave the Co$ but blame all the problems on “current management” and still believe in Scientology (I’m looking at you, Mr. Rathbun). This fish rots not from the head, but from Source. Slappy is just continuing the scam that Poppa Hubbard started; the only consolation is that he’s doing it badly and is running it into the ground.
Read the Marketing Series (Admin volume 6, I believe), Hubbard lays out the entire scam right there: Find out what people want, and then tell them that you have it. They’ll come running.
I disagree that Scientology has worked for him.
He is obviously closed-minded and has bought into the bullshit. He has been denied the ability to think for himself. Instead, he is programmed to think with the logic of LRH, and based on the false premises of LRH.
In short, it is an artifically induced insanity. His mind may be functional, but it is running logically based on a set of false assumptions. Thus, the conclusions that he comes to are false, because the presumption is false.
Can you say that he would have followed the path he did had it not been for Scientolgy? Would he have been better served by a more normal life, where he could have applied his talents and maybe raised a family? Kept his business profitable? Afforded a comfortable retirement? Taken vacations?
The fact is that he may, indeed, be happy with having lived all of his life serving the Church of Scientology. But, that life was based on a lie.
IMO, Scientology defrauded him out of everything he could have had in life, because there is simply no “clearing the planet” to be had.
When I say ‘it’s worked for him’ is because this is the only thing holding him together. It’s sort of like being unplugged from the matrix too late in life. He couldn’t handle it.
All successful Scientologists must have cable TV.
LRH said scientology raises your IQ 50 points and triples your income. Why isn’t this man living in a mansion and quoting Einstein?
